Foot Reflexology

The American physician William Fitzgerald (1872–1942) is regarded as the pioneer of modern reflexology. Alongside his conventional medical training, he knew methods of Native American folk medicine, including ideas about reflex connections and a pressure treatment that has been used for centuries and is still practised on reservations today. From this, Fitzgerald developed a system: he divided the body into ten vertical zones.

In 1917, this concept and the “zone therapy” he developed laid the foundation for today's reflexology. The vertical zones were later each divided into three horizontal zones, and this division is still the basis of foot reflexology today. From America, reflexology reached Germany by way of England. Hanne Marquardt's training school has been teaching the system since 1967.
