Lymphatic Drainage
Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a gentle medical massage technique that decongests tissue, stimulates lymph flow and reduces swelling (oedema). It is ideal after surgery, for lipoedema and lymphoedema, or to support recovery. Gentle circular and pumping movements encourage tissue fluid to drain away.
Effects
- Decongestion & reduced swelling: Gentle, rhythmic movements stimulate lymph circulation, effectively reducing fluid build-up (oedema) in the arms, legs or face.
- Pain relief: Improved circulation and reduced pressure in the tissue can relieve pain, for example in chronic conditions such as rheumatism or fibromyalgia.
- Faster healing: After surgery (e.g. breast cancer surgery or a hip replacement) or injury, MLD helps the body break down bruising (haematomas) and reduces post-operative swelling.
- Relaxation & well-being: The gentle technique calms the autonomic nervous system, reduces stress and can improve sleep.
- Supporting the immune system: Activating the lymphatic system helps carry away toxins more efficiently, strengthening the body's defences.
Areas of application
Manual lymphatic drainage is widely used, especially for:
- Lymphoedema (chronic fluid build-up)
- Lipoedema
- Post-operative swelling and haematomas
- Heavy, swollen legs (including during pregnancy)
- Migraines and chronic fatigue
